Your first tentative steps into the world of business can be exciting. But, they can also be tremulous. You don’t want to turn down work, but you also need to make sure that you are managing and meeting your client’s expectations. There is a delicate balance that needs to be achieved when you are starting out in the business world. Managing your client’s expectations is top of your priorities. After all, they are what pay the bills and keep you in business.

 

There are four savvy ways that you can manage your client expectations as a start-up:

 

1. Communicate Regularly

One of the most important things that you can do is to contact your clients. You need to do this on a regular basis. You can send a daily update via email. You can  communicate with them via your Mitel 5000 London phone. Whatever your preferred method, the importance of regular communication cannot be stressed enough. Keeping your clients in the loop is vital to your success. But, as much as you communicate to your customers, they need to be able to get hold of you. After all, they need to access you as their resource. Of course, answering emails or calls until two am is not recommended. But, having the lines of communication open is vital to your businesses success.

2. Be Honest

Honesty is the best policy when it comes to managing your client’s expectations. Filling them with false hopes is not what you should be doing. If you don’t have the capacity for more work, tell them. Give them a workable deadline. If you are going to be late delivering a project, tell them in advance. Don’t land it on them on deadline day. Many people understand the pressures of business, so being honest is one of the best ways to ensure that you keep people on your side.


 

3. Under Promise and Over Deliver

Yes. This is the oldest trick in the book. But, if you think that you can complete a deadline within a week, tell your clients that you will need three weeks. That way, when you deliver two weeks early, you are a shining star. But, it also allows for mishaps. Things happen away from your business that needs attending to. So, if the worst does happen, you are also giving yourself leeway to remedy any issues. Tech problems or your personal life (yes, you do have one) can run into problems. By under promising on a deadline, you are giving yourself breathing space. But, you are also ensuring that you are delivering within the parameters of your client’s expectations.

4. The Importance of Reporting

The peril of reporting can be dull. But when it comes to managing your client, it’s one of the best ways of dealing with them. A weekly report on your project completion is a vital asset to your customers. A weekly update doesn’t have to involve spreadsheets and figures. But, it does need to be comprehensive enough that they can see what they are paying for. After all, they are paying you to do a task. A simple email checking off what you have completed throughout the week is enough to keep your clients happy and in the know.
